What Houstonians Can Do to Celebrate the Kentucky Derby

What Houstonians Can Do to Celebrate the Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is this Saturday with the main race starting at 5:30 p.m. (CT). Derby Day is full of festivities before and after the race and are traditionally fun to attend. Even though we are all the way in Texas, we can still celebrate by putting a Kentucky Derby spin on our Saturday activities. Here’s some things you could do to enjoy an American tradition without leaving the state.

Throw a Best Dressed Contest

Kentucky Derby attendees make sure they’re dressed their best. Men come in their classic suits inspired by the “good ol'” days and ladies take pride in their decorative hats. Have your friends all dress the part, give out prizes and make your typical Saturday memorable.

Did Anyone Say Mint Julep?

The Mint Julep is a signature Kentucky Derby drink so load up on these ingredients to impress your guests.

You’ll need:

2 oz. Woodford Reserve
1/2 oz. Simple Syrup
3 Fresh Mint Leaves
Crushed Ice

Squeeze out the essential oils in the mint and rub them inside the glass. To the same glass, add simple syrup, bourbon, and crushed ice. Stir. Garnish with more ice and fresh mint.
